Bedroom Temperature and Sleep: The Ideal Range at Night

Of all the factors that shape a good night's sleep, temperature is one of the most powerful and the most overlooked. Many people fight their way through restless nights without realising that the room itself may be too warm. In my work, I treat the bedroom's thermal environment as an active part of sleep design, not an afterthought — because getting it right can make falling asleep easier and rest deeper, night after night. Temperature is invisible, but the body
feels every degree. The good news is that, unlike many aspects of health, room temperature is almost entirely within your control.What the science saysYour body regulates its temperature through the hypothalamus together with the thyroid axis, and this system is closely tied to sleep. As you drift off, your core body temperature naturally falls by roughly 0.5 to 1°C, and that drop helps trigger sleep onset and supports longer periods of deep sleep. Research shows that body temperature and sleep
are tightly linked, and that a cooler core is part of how the body moves into restorative rest (PMC6491889). In a warm room, the body has to work harder to shed heat, and that struggle can fragment sleep and cut short its deepest, most restorative stages.The same thermoregulation connects to metabolism through the thyroid. Research has examined how thyroid hormones shape the body's energy and heat balance, and how ambient temperature interacts with that system (PMC4044302, PMC12220739). For the spaces
we sleep and work in, the practical message is consistent: a room that is slightly cool supports the body's natural night-time cooling, while an overly warm room works against it.
