Acoustic Design for Health: Quieter Homes, Calmer Bodies

Acoustic design brings the AHR pillar of Longevity by Design into the home. Noise is a physiological stressor, not a comfort preference. The body reacts to sound even during sleep. Chronic noise elevates stress hormones and fragments sleep architecture. This happens even when the sleeper never consciously wakes. The cardiovascular link is documented. WHO Europe reviewed the evidence in 2018. Its guidelines set 53 dB Lden for road traffic. Night-time exposure should stay below 45 dB. The methodology's domestic target
keeps continuous indoor sound under 55 dB. Quieter homes are designed, not hoped for. Bedrooms belong on the quiet side of the plan. Mechanical rooms stay away from sleeping walls. Glazing, seals and mass block street noise. Soft, absorbent materials cut reverberation inside. HVAC systems are specified for low background sound. Each measure is checked with a meter, not by ear.
