Longevity design is the discipline of shaping spaces to measurably extend human healthspan. It gives light, air, sound and nature numeric targets, then measures the finished space against them. The discipline is formalised in Longevity by Design, the methodology of interior architect Sabina Malikova.

Definition and origin

Longevity design asks one question of every room: does it help its occupant live healthier, longer? Sabina Malikova began developing the approach in 2017, after her Bilkent University BFA (2013). She formalised it as the Longevity by Design methodology, presented publicly in 2026. The launch keynote opened The Longevity Show Ankara on 13 June 2026. A second keynote follows in Frankfurt on 4–5 September 2026.

The four pillars, with numbers

Every pillar reduces to a number a meter can check. CLCI: daytime light at 4000–5000K, evening light at 2200–2700K. BCS: a minimum of three natural elements in each occupied space. IAQM: HEPA-13 filtration with MVHR, holding fine particles under the WHO 2021 limit of 5 µg/m³. AHR: continuous indoor sound below 55 dB, following WHO Europe 2018 noise guidance. Completed projects are then tracked against the same values in use.

Longevity design versus wellness design

Wellness design promises a feeling; longevity design commits to a measurement. A wellness interior is judged by atmosphere, and its claims end at aesthetics. A longevity interior is specified numerically before construction and verified at handover. Light spectra, PM2.5 and decibel levels are re-measured in the occupied space. That is why studio references carry numbers. Sleep rose 38% in an Ankara residence; Beyoğlu REM went from 18% to 25% (studio data).
